Introduction to Business Intelligence 

- What is Business Intelligence? 

Business Intelligence (BI) is: “The processes, technologies and tools needed to turn data into information and information into knowledge and knowledge into plans that drive profitable business action. BI encompasses data warehousing, business analytics and knowledge management.”
The Data Warehouse Institute, Q4/2002

Business Intelligence is defined as "knowledge gained about a business through the use of various hardware/software technologies which enable organizations to turn data into information”.

- What is Oracle Business Intelligence?

• Portfolio of technology and applications that provides the industry's first integrated, end-to-end Enterprise Performance Management System, including BI foundation and tools

• Provides user the data and tools to answer questions that are important to running the part of the business for which they are responsible: – Determine whether the business is on track – Identify where things are going wrong – Take and monitor corrective actions – Sport trends

- Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g (OBIEE) 

• Oracle BI Enterprise Edition 11g is a comprehensive business intelligence platform that delivers a full range of analytic and reporting capabilities.

• Facilitates data analysis, mining and publishing capabilities on top of physical data warehouse.

There are number of capabilities within the suit.
•Role-based dashboards
•Proactive alerts -> ability to send proactive alerts using delivers application
•Mobile access
•MS Office integration
•Logical view of data
•Query processing and modeling
•Planning and what-if analysis
•Multiple data sources

Introduction to Oracle BI EE 

• Oracle Business Intelligence (OBIEE) is a reporting tool used to develop and access the reports.

• OBIEE is a robust report development and delivery tool that contains a range of reporting features. Its reporting contents delivered through dashboards.

Presentation Services 

Presentation Services includes end-user tools that provide access to business intelligence information.

• Oracle BI Analysis Editor
 – Set of graphical tools used to build, view, and modify Oracle BI analyses
• Oracle BI Dashboard
 – Display the results of analyses and other items

Oracle BI Presentation Server and Catalog 

Presentation Server provides processing to visualize information for end-user consumption.
• Uses the Presentation Catalog to store saved content
• Receives data from Oracle BI Server and provides it to the enduser tool that requested it

Oracle BI Server 

Oracle BI Server is the core server behind Oracle Business Intelligence.
• Provides efficient processing to access physical data sources and structure information
– Uses metadata to direct processing
– Generates dynamic SQL to query data in the physical data sources
– Structures results to satisfy requests
– Provides BI data to Oracle BI Presentation Services

Oracle BI Repository 

The BI repository stores the metadata used by Oracle BI Server. • Accessed and configured using the Oracle BI Administration Tool, which is used by administrator to:
– Import metadata from databases and other data sources
– Simplify and reorganize the metadata into business models
– Structure the business model for presentation to analysis and dashboard users

Data Sources 

Data sources contain the business data that users want to analyze
• Accessed by Oracle BI Server
• Can be in any format, such as:
– Relational databases
– Online analytical processing (OLAP) databases flat files
– XML for Analysis (XMLA)

OBIEE Installation 

The Oracle Business Intelligence installation package includes the following products, with all the technology required to install, configure, and run them:
• Oracle BI EE
• Oracle BI Publisher
• Oracle BI Add-in for Microsoft Office
• Oracle BI Administration Tool

Tasks in the Oracle BI Installation Procedure 

Task 1: 
• Obtain the Oracle Business Intelligence installation media through one of the following methods:
– Oracle Business Intelligence installation DVD
– Oracle Technology Network (OTN)
– Oracle Software Delivery Cloud

Task 2: 
• Complete the installation planning requirements.
• Ensure that your system environment meets the installation requirements for Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle Business Intelligence, and the Repository Creation Utility (RCU).

Task 3: 
• Have a database installed and have the required database schemas loaded.
• Oracle Business Intelligence requires certain schemas to be installed in a supported database. You do this by running RCU on a pre-existing database.
• Ensure that a supported database is running, and then run RCU to create the necessary schemas.

Task 4:
 • Install Oracle Business Intelligence.

Task 5:
 • Configure Oracle Business Intelligence.

Start Stop Server 

Starting & Stopping Oracle BI 

• Oracle Business Intelligence runs within Oracle WebLogic Server, and therefore Oracle WebLogic Server must be started before Oracle Business Intelligence components can be started and maintained.

• To make changes to server configuration settings, the Oracle BI Presentation Catalog, the repository (.rpd file offline), and other settings, you must restart the appropriate Oracle Business Intelligence components before those changes can take effect.

Start oracle database 

• Open command prompt
• Key in command : . oraenv
• orcl
• sqlplus / as sysdba
• startup
• exit
• lsnrctl start

Start OBIEE 

1.Weblogic 
• cd /home/oracle/bi11g/user_projects/domains/bifoundation _domain/bin • ./startWebLogic.sh

2.Node Manager 
• cd /home/oracle/bi11g/wlserver_10.3/server/bin
• ./startNodeManager.sh

3.Managed Server 
• cd /home/oracle/bi11g/user_projects/domains/bifoundation _domain/bin • ./startManagedWebLogic.sh bi_server1 t3://vtchost:7001

4.Oracle Process Manager and Notification server (OPMN) 
• cd bi11g/instances/instance1/bin
• ./opmnctl startall
• ./opmnctl status

Stop OBIEE 
1.Oracle Process Manager and Notification server (OPMN)

2.Managed Server

Brief intro to the technology used in Enterprise

Figure 1 it show the outline of the evolution technology used in Enterprise from year 1900 till 2013. based one the figure it show on the enhancement in the field of manufacturing, logistic, globalization and cloud computing. I learn that even the phone have rapid transformation for instance in year 1984 IBM first mobile/smart phone the later on 2007 the first iPhone has been created.

The evolution of storage has it history of creation, which in the year 1800 the first taper was invented later in year 1953 the first laser printing was produce as to overcome problem in human writing. The crucial evolution is in year 1971 where the first disk ed invented to store data. This is the start of storage evolution begin. Later in 1979 the compact CD/CD ROM ,1983 the connect storage, in 1995 the DVD and in 2000 the tumbdrive.

Around 1999 the first cloud is being introduce and subscribe. The the world is blown with the Google apps platform in year 2006. Then in 2008 the elastic cloud is introduce, follow the next year the creation of host window platform. With the creation of cloud maybe the need of PC can be less use but the circumstance is that more data storage must be created.

Brief intro to the Oracle technology available to the Enterprise

Now we move on to the main topic the world of Oracle. Referring from the oracle documentation document on then Brief History of Oracle Database, The current version of Oracle Database is the result of over 35 years of innovative development.

Highlights in the evolution of Oracle Database include the following:

Founding of Oracle

In 1977, Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates started the consultancy Software Development Laboratories, which became Relational Software, Inc. (RSI). In 1983, RSI became Oracle Systems Corporation and then later Oracle Corporation.

First commercially available RDBMS

In 1979, RSI introduced Oracle V2 (Version 2) as the first commercially available SQL-based RDBMS, a landmark event in the history of relational databases.

Portable version of Oracle Database

Oracle Version 3, released in 1983, was the first relational database to run on mainframes, minicomputers, and PCs. The database was written in C, enabling the database to be ported to multiple platforms.

Enhancements to concurrency control, data distribution, and scalability

Version 4 introduced multiversion read consistency. Version 5, released in 1985, supported client/server computing and distributed database systems. Version 6 brought enhancements to disk I/O, row locking, scalability, and backup and recovery. Also, Version 6 introduced the first version of the PL/SQL language, a proprietary procedural extension to SQL.

PL/SQL stored program units

Oracle7, released in 1992, introduced PL/SQL stored procedures and triggers.

Objects and partitioning

Oracle8 was released in 1997 as the object-relational database, supporting many new data types. Additionally, Oracle8 supported partitioning of large tables.

Internet computing

Oracle8i Database, released in 1999, provided native support for internet protocols and server-side support for Java. Oracle8i was designed for internet computing, enabling the database to be deployed in a multitier environment.

Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC)

Oracle9i Database introduced Oracle RAC in 2001, enabling multiple instances to access a single database simultaneously. Additionally, Oracle XML Database (Oracle XML DB) introduced the ability to store and query XML.

Grid computing

Oracle Database 10g introduced grid computing in 2003. This release enabled organizations to virtualize computing resources by building agrid infrastructure based on low-cost commodity servers. A key goal was to make the database self-managing and self-tuning. Oracle Automatic Storage Management (Oracle ASM) helped achieve this goal by virtualizing and simplifying database storage management.

Manageability, diagnosability, and availability

Oracle Database 11g, released in 2007, introduced a host of new features that enabled administrators and developers to adapt quickly to changing business requirements. The key to adaptability is simplifying the information infrastructure by consolidating information and using automation wherever possible.

Plugging In to the Cloud

Oracle Database 12c, released in 2013, was designed for the Cloud, featuring a new Multitenant architecture, In-Memory column store, and support for JSON documents. Oracle Database 12c helps customers make more efficient use of their IT resources, while continuing to reduce costs and improve service levels for users.

The outline of the of the history of oracle can be summarize in figure 2 and figure 3.

Based on figure 2, from 1977 till 1988 all about database while from 1989 till 1999 all about oracle building/creating software/apps. The main highlight is in year 1979 where the development of RSI replacing STC and in year 1987 where they decided to start to build software related to database that more related to accounting/business software.

2005-relize to build a software is a lot cost so solution to subscribe them usually on HR dept. to apply leave etc...
2000 On wards people more involve in internet, realize people start to compare the appearance of the system
2006 – event its is an open source but the framework cant be change to make its secure and standardize
2007- from 10g to 11g
2008-their marketing campaign; Exadata- engineer system like iron movie find in YouTube oracle sponsor to appear in the iron man movie
2009-as a translator for to language vs IBM for middleware
2010-first available for cloud offering; they build chips from IBM or Intel
Exadata usually use solaris then later they just buy  hardware for marble software for oracle
Data where-house (exadata) big company willing to pay cause many data to proses transaction data
2013-similer concept like java like drag and drop apps
2014-similer to engineer system (exalytics) part of OBIEE; SOA Suite the evolution like Microsoft office that evolve to new step. Like new product inside
2015- in cloud era.

VM

Based on figure 4 its categorize 2 type of VM (Virtual Machine) with representative example.
Type 1 hypervisor run directly on the hardware with VM resources provided by the hypervisor.
Type 2 hypervisor runs on a host operating system to provide virtualization services.

Hands On- Setup VM

After a long theory and boost up history in oracle, the trainer give us a Hands On to Setup our VM to install our own Oracle Database in a vitalization state. We use the Virtual Box software to create our VM. In the Virtual Box , we can set up the preference require such as the virtual disk, network and OS needed to install the Oracle database application.

Short note:
-VDI is the native format of VirtualBox.
-VMDK is developed by and for VMWare, but Sun xVM, QEMU, VirtualBox, SUSE Studio, and .NET DiscUtils also support it.
-VHD is the native format of Microsoft Virtual PC.
